3 Social Work continuing education contact hours

Eating disorders are serious emotional and physical conditions that can have life-threatening consequences. Participants will learn about how to:
- Define Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and Eating Disorder NOS as updated in the DSM V
- Describe the medical complications of eating disorders
- Articulate the role of the registered dietitian and psychologist in the treatment of eating disorders

Obesity Treatment - A Medical Psychology Approach
CEUs: 3 CEUs for psychologists
3 Social Work continuing education contact hours
Time: Workshop 1 pm - 4 pm
Obesity is a complex disease that impacts a majority of Americans; it is likely to affect many clients who come to therapy for non-weight/eating-related issues. There are biological, psychological, social, behavioral and environmental causes and consequences to the disease and our treatments must consider each of these contributors in order to be effective. This workshop will highlight how clinicians can address weight in a therapeutic way, will review different treatment philosophies and clinical interventions, will explore the range of eating behaviors commonly reported by clients with obesity, and will discuss the interplay between weight and mental health issues.
Participants will learn about how to:
- Define obesity and binge eating (in the absence of purging).
- Understand the complexity of assessing obesity and eating behavior.
- Learn to conceptualize various types of eating behavior commonly reported in patients with obesity including: overeating, loss of control eating, mindless eating, sneak eating, binge eating.
- Conceptualize the interplay between mental health conditions (e.g., depression and anxiety) and personal history (e.g., abuse history) with eating/weight.
- Discuss three main types of clinical modalities for treating obesity/binge eating including CBT, IPT, MI.
- Determine which patients need referral for more intensive treatment of obesity from those who may be helped by commercial programs like Weight Watchers.
- Identify local resources and educational materials that may benefit patients with obesity and/or binge eating.
