Program Description and Objectives

This workshop is designed for Mental Health Professionals interested in learning how to use mind/body techniques for professional self-care as well as for the care of their clients. Workshop participants will acquire knowledge in: 1) recognizing and treating combat-related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in military personnel; 2) yoga and other energization techniques for professional self-care. Recognizing and treating combat-related Traumatic Brain Injury in military personnel; and 3) your choice of various application of military psychology in a small break out group. The second half of the workshop will feature a panel discussion of different mind/body interventions that practitioners can use with their clients (i.e. meditation, diaphragmatic breathing). At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be better able to identify and implement quick, effective, stress-reducing techniques for themselves as well as for their clients.

1:15-2:15 PM            Meditation as Therapy by Dr. Deborah Norris, Founder of the Mindfulness Center and Director Psychobiology of Healing Program, Department of Psychology, American University

2:15-3:15 PM            Yoga and Energization Techniques in the Workplace by Dr. Mary Kralj and Dr. Stephen Bowles

3:15-3:30 PM            Break

3:30-4:30 PM            Break Out Groups

  • ·       Definition of Mind/ Body Approaches by Dr. Stein followed by 3-5 small group break out groups that will include The 3-5 break out group will consist of these facilitators: Dr. Stein, Dr. Favero, Dr. Thestrup, Ms. Faith Lewis, Dr. Stafford, Ms. Kate Kelly, Dr. Harmon, Ms. Michele Vecchio, Dr. Cato, Dr. Norris, Dr. Krajl and Dr. Bowles

  • ·      Application to Clinical Practice and Personal Life Experiences
  • ·      Utilizing Different Strategies Employing Mind/Body Approaches  
  • ·      How Mind/Body Approaches Effect the Brain Explained By Neuroscience

Accrediation

The District of Columbia Psychological Association, through the sponsorship of the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health, is able to offer American Psychological Association approved continuing education credits to psychologists. The Mind/Body Approaches for Psychological Interventions workshop is approved for 3 hours of continuing education units for psychologists.
