Therapists are trained to take care of people, but are rarely trained to successfully run or care for a business. Developing business skills is essential in providing options and perspectives for therapists. This presentation will provide proven 'best practices' and a foundation for therapists who may want to set up and run their own business, either individually or as a group. Through anecdotes, process-sharing, and mathematical formula, attendees will receive the tools necessary to make better business decisions and profitable endeavors.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will identify the types of business structures available in private practice
- Participants will explain the personal, professional, and financial factors that underlie successful private practice
- Participants will list two ways to track practice development goals
- Participants will discuss a practical approach for creating a business plan for private practice
About the Presenters:
Dr. Krystal Stanley
Krystal Stanley is a licensed psychologist in New York, Maryland, DC and Virginia. She is originally from North Carolina and currently lives in Takoma (DC). Krystal enjoys her life as an introvert, and reads lots of books for fun. For a living, she helps people in her mental health private practice, Re-New Psychological Services (est. 2010). In the past 18 months, her practice held over 27,000 sessions with over 30 therapists. Re-New has offices in Silver Spring, Thomas Circle, Dupont Circle and Capitol Hill. Krystal also maintains relationships with local college counseling centers such as University of MD, Howard, Catholic and American Universities. With all of this, her favorite spot is at home, on her couch, with her Snuggie.

David Rives
David is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and moved to DC from Seattle in 2002. He has spent the last 12 years on the east coast working as an IT Project Manager for various federal government agencies as a contractor. He has worked at Re-New Psychological Services since 2011. Probably his crowning achievement recently is quitting his job at the IRS in 2017 to focus on running the business side of Re-New full-time. David now runs Kairos Billing and Consulting Services and manages Re-New at the same time. He enjoys playing/listening to music, playing video games and sports talk radio.
David and Krystal have been married since 2012, and both look forward to continuing to share their business best practices and lessons learned with whoever will listen.
