LGBTQ people utilize therapy at higher rates than the general population. However, we therapists are sometimes not aware enough of the unique challenges and issues LGBTQ clients bring into therapy. This workshop is designed to offer a look at how historical and current misunderstandings and biases can (and have) negatively affected work with this population. We will review guidelines for this work, along with reviewing the issues of most concern to many LGBTQ people and how to help our clients move through them.
Workshop Objectives: At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Give 3 guidelines supporting use of Affirmative Therapy
- Name 3 stages of identity formation in their LGBTQ clients.
- Identify 3 types of therapeutic misunderstandings and/or biases and how to counter them.
- Identify 3 issues therapists need to be familiar with when working with LGBTQ clients.
