Psychologists, Social Workers and other mental health professionals, are often told to “give psychology away” to the general public, build a practice niche by developing expert presentations on your specialty area, to speak out on social justice issues, to “outreach” to other health professionals, to work as “consultants” in a variety of settings. What is not usually included in this advice is that all these activities involve one essential skill – public speaking. The key to taking advantage of all these career and practice building opportunities is to build your skill in public speaking; Ed Barks is a communications training consultant who has devoted his career to doing just that.
This workshop will be an introduction to a systematic approach to developing public speaking skills, and will feature a mix of talk, video clips, small group practice and Q & A opportunities.
About the Speakers:
Edward Barks has guided thousands of today’s business, association, scientific and entertainment leaders to more dynamic presentations. A veteran of the Washington, DC public relations scene, he perfected his own talents during a decade long tenure as a radio broadcaster. He is the author of a comprehensive guide, “The Truth About Public Speaking: Three Keys to Great Presentations,” as well as numerous other training materials.
Christopher Wemple, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who worked for a number of years with the Montgomery County, MD Police Department, providing counseling and consultation to department employees (sworn and civilian), and their family members. He has presented several trainings for DCPA on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) and is also a founding board member of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.
Workshop Objectives: At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Learn 2 key principles to apply in a lifelong process of improving your skills as a speaker and presenter.
- Learn 3 specific ways to address your resistance and cope with your anxiety in public speaking and presenting.
- Learn 4 ways that developing public speaking and presentation skills can enhance your career; whether in academia, private practice, or other settings.
