The goal of this workshop is to provide clinicians with an understanding of the impact of complex trauma and its assessment and treatment. Dr. Brand will emphasize practical skills that are essential in treating traumatized adults including supporting clients’ management of intrusive traumatic material and dissociation. She will present methods for assisting clients’ management of safety struggles and working through their attachment difficulties. Dr. Brand will make clinically-relevant research comprehensible and useful to clinicians. Clinical vignettes, patients’ art work and journaling, and videos will be used to demonstrate approaches to treating traumatized and neglected clients.
Learning objectives:
- Participants will be able to describe classic PTSD.
- Participants will be able to describe complex PTSD.
- Participants will be able to effectively present the cycle of self-harm to clients who struggle with self-destructive behavior.
- Participants will identify three ways to stabilize clients’ safety struggles.
- Participants will discuss three ways to stabilize clients’ dissociation.
- Participants will describe three specific coping strategies to help contain traumatic memories.
About the presenter:
Bethany Brand, Ph.D. specializes in the assessment and treatment of trauma related disorders including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative disorders (DDs). She has over 25 years of clinical experience, including training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and at Sheppard Pratt Health System’s Trauma Disorders program. She is a Professor of Psychology at Towson University. Dr. Brand has been honored with numerous research, teaching and clinical awards and served on 3 national task forces that developed guidelines for the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders. Dr. Brand is the Principal Investigator on an international treatment study of DDs (the TOP DD studies). Dr. Brand is the Principal Investigator on a series of studies that are developing methods for distinguishing DDs from other conditions including malingered DDs. She has delivered clinical and research presentations around the world. In addition to assessing and treating patients, Dr. Brand serves as a forensic expert.
