Death With Dignity: Understanding the Legislation & Clinician's Role

Last year, following much national attention, DC Councilmember Mary Cheh initiated B21-0038, the Death With Dignity Act of 2015. To gain greater knowledge and awareness into this Act and how it impacts us as community members and mental health professionals we will show the documentary 'How to Die in Oregon'. The film depicts the political, medical and personal process within DWD legislation.  Following the film we will hold a discussion and Q & A session with experts on the topic, sharing personal and professional views and experiences on the subject.  The role of the mental health professional and key clinical issues including regulatory, ethical and interpersonal matters will be discussed and addressed. Megan E. Brown and Kelly A Whittier from Councilmember Mary Cheh's legal and communications teams respectively, will provide technical expertise on DC's Death with Dignity legislation.

About the film:

How to Die in Oregon

In this thought provoking feature, filmmaker Peter Richardson gently enters the lives of the terminally ill as they consider whether – and when – to end their lives by lethal overdose. Richardson examines both sides of this complex, emotionally charged issue. And offers a powerful portrait of what it means to die with dignity. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will:

1) Be able to define death with dignity and understand the legal provisions of the DWD bill.

2) Understand various points of views and decision points for availing oneself to DWD.

3) Become familiar with the medical and oversight process by which patients receive and utilize the DWD medication.
