LGBTQ THERAPY 101: Understanding and Conducting Therapy with LGBTQ Clients

This introductory course will be tailored to questions and concerns that participants express. The first half of the course will include an unpacking of the acronym LGBTQIA to provide participants with an up to date look at who makes up our community of concern. Participants will be led through a brief history of the community in our country and in our consultation rooms, especially since the American Psychiatric Association took homosexuality off of the list of psychiatric disorders in 1973. The central phenomenon of homophobia (Including bi-phobia and trans-phobia) will be examined through a case study and artistic reflections. The second half of the course will look specifically at therapeutic concerns, including the American Psychological Association's best practice guidelines for working with the LGB community, and international guidelines for working with the transsexual community. Therapeutic attitudes and strategies that LGBTQ therapy clients often find helpful will be examined. Participants will leave with resource sheets for further study and contacts.
AGENDA
A. Unpacking the acronym “LGBTQIA”. Understanding recent LGBTQ historical developments. (40 minutes)
B. Case study in words and photographs: “Forming A Gay Identity” (30 minutes)

C. APA Ethical Guidelines and best practices for conducting psychotherapy with members of the LGBTQ community (40 minutes)
D. Small group discussions (30 minutes)
E. Large Group Discussion (30 minutes)
Instructor Bio:
Douglas R. Favero Ph.D. is a full time private practice psychotherapist located at 3000 Connecticut Ave. NW #330, Washington, D.C. He is the Chair of the DCPA Ethics committee as well as the Co-Chair of the DCPA Social Justice Committee. He sees adult clients in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, and he sees other working therapists in supervision. He is eclectic in approach and utilizes client-centered, Jungian, schema oriented and mind/body oriented modalities. He has an interest in music and music composition as an adjunct to guided imagery and deep relaxation.
Ms. Alexandra Happ-Stein is a graduate of Yale University with a degree in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She also attended Tel Aviv University studying Conflict Resolution and Mediation. She has been active in the National LGBTQ Task Force, Yale Office of LGBTQ Resources, Yale Queer Peers, Fierce Advocates at Yale, Students for a New American Politics PAC, and National Student Partnerships. She is an Independent Living Skills Coordinator working with young adults with autism, learning disabilities, and other forms of neurodiversity and was a case associate with The Jewish Board of Children and Family Services in Brooklyn, NY.
