Enlightened health insurers have in recent years come to realize that psychological interventions are not just a cost to be reduced, but a cost-effective means of improving patient care and reducing overall costs across many patient populations.  They are also looking to psychology for help in measuring outcomes and quality, and encouraging better, evidence-based care, for example by moving toward value-based reimbursement. This shift in insurer thinking creates new opportunities for psychologists to work collaboratively with insurance companies and demonstrate the benefits from their work. This panel features representatives from Care First, AmeriHealth and Optum who will talk about their companies’ initiatives.  They will also provide their perspective on where and how psychologists can best bring their value to the health care system and move it forward.

This workshop will explore a variety of risk management and legal issues for you and your members to take into consideration for a safe transition to alternative practice models (APMs) and integrated healthcare settings. Presenters will discuss risk management considerations for psychologists moving from traditional practice settings to APMs, including the shift from the psychologist being solely responsible for the patient’s mental health care, to being part of a team of health care professionals making collaborative decisions about the patient’s integrated care.  Additionally, you will hear an overview of how legal issues shift along the spectrum between simple and complex APMs as well as an overview of antitrust guidance for IPAs and management services organizations (MSOs) that jointly negotiate on behalf of the independent practices that join the IPA or MSO.

This workshop will get into the practical details of some large alternative practice models (APMs) that are expanding and/or developing in new ways.  These APMs create opportunities for psychologists to provide better care for patients and to better measure those care improvements.  The workshop will also answer the question – how are these very large, complex APMs relevant to the vast majority of solo and small group practitioners who lack the considerable resources necessary to launch a large APM?
