Using the MMPI in Clinical Practice: Focus on Interpretation

1. Participants will be able to name and discuss two strengths and two weaknesses of the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-2-RF
2. Participants will be able to identify and articulate the differences between the interpretation of the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-2-RF
3. Participants will be able to name and discuss the interpretation of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF validity scales
Summary: The MMPI-2 remains the most commonly used personality test by psychologists, even though a new iteration of the test, the MMPI-2-RF was published in 2008. This workshop will discuss both the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-2-RF, focusing in on the appropriate use and interpretation of the instruments. The adolescent version of both instruments will be mentioned; however, the focus will be on the adult instruments.

Rorschach Interpretation in Clinical Practice: Going Beyond Computerized Interpretations

1. Participants will be able to explain the deviation principle of interpretation.
2. Participants will be able to name and discuss at least two differences between CS interpretation and R-PAS interpretation.
3. Participants will be able to explain at least one strength and one weakness of the international norms.
Summary: Despite controversy surrounding its use, the Rorschach continues to be one of the more commonly used personality instruments among psychologists. Yet training in the Rorschach, in both graduate courses and in training workshops, tends to focus on coding. The focus on this workshop will be on the interpretation of the Rorschach. The interpretation of variables used in both the CS and the R-PAS will be addressed. The results of the recent meta-analysis by Mihura et al. (2013) that assessed the validity of the Rorschach CS variables will also be discussed, as will the implications of their results. Strengths and weaknesses of using automated interpretation will also be discussed.
PRESENTER BIO:
Dr. Gurley is an Associate Professor at the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Washington DC in the APA accredited clinical psychology program. Our main goal and purpose is to educate and train future psychologists. She is also a psychologist in private practice (licensed in DC, MD, and VA). Her practice is centered around consultation and education law. She is frequently retained by attorneys to review other psychologists’ assessment work and consults with attorneys and organizations on regarding psychological assessment. Additionally, she conducts psychological assessments with under-served populations.
